beanz, the award-winning magazine bringing educational and inspirational content about science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) to children, adults and teachers, is expanding its distribution to reach more children in at-risk communities. I’ve checked it out as much as I can. It appears to be worthy of consideration.

While flipping through a vintage (2015-2016) Harvard Business Review (printed) magazine, I was struck by the article “Why Strategy Execution Unravels—and What to Do About It” by Donald Sull, Rebecca Homkes, and Charles Sull.
One of the most valuable pieces of “real estate” in any magazine is the page facing the inside back cover. Over the years, I’ve known many publications — both trade and consumer — with must-read departments or columns in that sacred space. Many times, they’re on the lighthearted or even humorous side.
My old friend Jim Pinto wrote a regular column for me at Automation World magazine. The magazines all still exist, but at reduced size. That tells me there’s not a lot of growth anticipated in automation, and that engineers reading those magazines mostly are buying parts. He was partly right and partly not.
I will admit I checked the cover of Power magazine when I first read about thermal energy storage using a box of rocks. By Mark Jones “Dumber than a box of rocks” is a colorful idiom. Suppose it is wrong. Suppose a box of rocks is actually smart. I checked to make sure it wasn’t… The post Are smart rocks on the horizon?

Remember all the products in PC Magazine and its siblings in the 80s and 90s? IT magazines…gone. PC magazines…gone (maybe a couple on the web). PC magazines…gone (maybe a couple on the web). Automation and control magazines are half the size of 15 years ago…and maybe even less.
During my five years post-manufacturing career at Control Engineering magazine, I had developed a discipline of rising early, reading some industry news, and posting to the CE news site. I renamed the blog to Gary Mintchell’s Feed Forward (a process control term and the title of my Editorial Page in the magazine).
The post Keeping Up With Pace of Change In Automotive Quality Control appeared first on Metrology and Quality News - Online Magazine. This often requires the measured part to be repositioned, leading to longer cycle times and increased operational costs.

Walt Boyes, then of Control magazine and I had a fun competition going. Most no longer support magazines or other media. Over 21 years, I’ve written more than 3,500 posts. The early days of live blogging CEO remarks were exciting. The market has changed. All companies are now blogging and doing their own marketing.
The latest was automation where a few of us started a magazine to cover it. Then a consumer product company where Consumer Reports published a poorly researched article—but the external market also changed. Then PC peripherals. The market was good for about 10 years.

And I don’t just mean “pay to play”, which some magazines have gone to in order to survive. Endeavor, a new company busily engaged in consolidating media properties, made this decision. Marketing people in this market still expect to get publicity without paying for it. I’m always sad at the passing of an era.
