Today, the shop primarily works on aerospace and defense parts, especially satellite structures and components. Beryllium stock is about 10 times as expensive as aluminum, McKay says. To avoid scrap, the company makes test parts out of aluminum to prove out machining processes and programs before embarking on a beryllium version.
