While part of the growth is due to comparison with a highly disrupted August 2021, it was nevertheless the best August 2012, with strong demand for vans, trucks and buses meaning the sector also recorded its best year-to-date performance since 2012, at 64,828 units – some 19.4% higher than the pre-pandemic five-year average.

In fact, as many electric were sold every week in 2021 as the total amount sold in the whole of 2012 (120,000), the IEA reports.
